About the Norse Name Generator

This site does one thing: it generates Old Norse personal names the way real people in the Viking Age actually carried them. Every result is a given name with a plain-language meaning gloss, and, if you want one, a correctly gendered patronymic in the historical -son / -dottir pattern. The tool runs entirely in your browser, needs no account, and is free without limits.

An attestation-minded corpus

Plenty of "Viking name" tools mash random syllables together. We took the slower road. The authentic style in this generator draws only from given names recorded in medieval sources: the Icelandic family sagas, Landnamabok (the Book of Settlements, which names roughly three thousand of Iceland's first settlers), and the memorial inscriptions carved on runestones across Scandinavia. Each name carries a short meaning gloss based on standard etymologies of its name elements. Where scholarship is uncertain, we prefer to leave a name out rather than invent a meaning. Spellings are normalized to plain ASCII (Bjorn rather than the manuscript form with special characters) so they are easy to type, search, and reuse. Two companion styles round out the tool: a mythology-inspired pool naming gods, valkyries, and legendary heroes, and a modern Scandinavian pool giving the descendant forms still in use today.

Where this tool ends and its sibling begins

This generator covers given names, meanings, and patronymics: the way people were named at birth. It deliberately does not generate the earned epithets and battle bynames of the era.
